Capture a transaction
Some payments are first authorised — the funds are reserved but not yet taken. This screen takes (captures) a payment that was previously authorised.
Where to find it
Select Capture on a transaction.
What you see
- The amount originally authorised, when it was authorised and how long ago, and, where the gateway sets one, when the authorisation expires.
- The maximum you can capture.
What you can do
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Capture amount | The amount to take, up to the authorised amount. |
| Whole amount | Tick to capture the full authorised amount. |
| Confirm capture | Takes the authorised payment, confirmed in a pop-up, and returns to the transaction. Rules: Capture an authorised payment. |
| Cancel | Returns to the transaction without capturing. |
Things to note
- Capture is only offered when the transaction is authorised and awaiting capture, and only with payment permission.
- Authorisations older than about a week are flagged, and an expired authorisation cannot be captured.
- You can capture less than was authorised.
