Localisation editor

This screen lets you edit the wording shown to donors — the branded strings used across the customer-facing experience — for a chosen branding and language. Use it to find a particular piece of wording, change it, or put it back to the wording it inherits.

Where to find it

Open it from the setup menu, or arrive via a deep link that takes you straight to a specific branding.

What you see

The set of editable strings for the selected branding and language, one string per row, with a search box above the list to narrow it down.

Searching

The search box (placeholder Type to search...) is focused when the screen opens. As you type, the list narrows to strings whose key or whose current wording contains what you typed. Matching is on partial text anywhere in the key or the wording, and letter case does not matter; several words are treated as one phrase, not as separate terms. The matching text is highlighted in each row. When the screen opens the box is empty, the list shows every string for the selected branding and language, sorted by key from A to Z, 20 per page. This screen has its own search box; it does not use the shared search bar.

Filters

FilterWhat it matches
BrandWhich branding's strings you are editing. Type to pick from the brandings you can access; the default branding is listed first. Only shown if you have branding-edit permission — otherwise you are always editing the default branding. Changing it switches to that branding's default language and clears the search box.
LanguageWhich language's strings you are editing. Lists the languages that already have strings for this branding (including any inherited from a parent branding); the default language is always available. Changing it clears the search box and returns to page 1.
addStarts a new language for the branding. Languages the branding already has are shown struck through. Choosing one switches the editor to that language, showing the inherited wording ready to be changed.

Brand and language together choose the set of strings; the search box then narrows within that set. There is no filter for changed strings only — look for the struck-through inherited wording under a row instead (see below).

Reading the list

ElementWhat it tells you
Key (small grey line)The identifier of the string. The same key means the same piece of wording across every branding and language.
WordingThe text donors currently see for this branding and language. If the string has not been changed at this level, this is the inherited wording.
Pencil iconOpens the wording for editing. Hidden while the row is saving or reverting.
Struck-through text below the wording, with revertThe string has been changed at this level; the struck-through text is the wording it inherits (from the parent branding or the default language). revert puts the inherited wording back.
revertingThe revert is being saved.
Struck-through text below the wording, with undoShown just after a revert: the struck-through text is the wording you replaced. undo restores it.
Highlighted rowThe row selected with the arrow keys.
  • Strings are sorted by key from A to Z; the search does not change the order.
  • Below the list, Showing lets you pick 10, 20, 50 or 100 per page (20 by default), of shows how many strings match, and Previous, the page numbers and Next move between pages. Typing in the search box returns you to page 1.
  • While the strings are loading, a spinner is shown in place of the list. If nothing matches your search, the list shows No Results.

What you can do

ControlWhat it does
Brand / LanguageChoose which branding and language to edit.
addStart a new language for the branding.
Search boxNarrow the list of strings by key or wording.
Pencil, then Save / Cancel (per string)Edit the wording of a string and save it, or cancel the edit. You can also select a row with the arrow keys and press Enter to edit, Enter to save, Escape to cancel. Save is only enabled once the wording has changed; it reads Saving while the change is stored. Rules: Override a branded string.
revert (per string)Restores a string to the wording it inherits. undo appears afterwards so you can put your wording back. Rules: Reset a branded string to its original.
ExportDownload every string for the selected branding and language as a spreadsheet, named after the language.
ImportUpload a spreadsheet of strings for the selected language; you see how many will be imported, any keys that were not recognised, any rows that could not be read, and a warning if the file name does not mention the selected language, before confirming. Only rows whose wording differs from what is shown are imported. Rules: Import branded strings from a file.

Things to note

  • Editing localisation requires the relevant branding permission. Without it (and outside a deep link), you're sent back with an access message.
  • The branding selector is only available to those with branding-edit permission.
  • The search only looks at the branding and language currently selected; changing either clears it.
  • If saving a change or a revert fails, the wording goes back to what it was and an error message is shown.
