Payment processing

Payment Processing is where you manage how your account takes payments. You connect one or more payment providers, adjust their settings, and choose which payment methods your customers see at checkout, and when. You can check the result without taking a test payment.

To open it, select Configure in the menu, then Configure under Payment Processing.

The first time you open it, you’re asked whether you already have a payment provider. In a sandbox account, you can use Shuttle’s sandbox gateway instead, which needs no provider account.

In a live account, if you don’t have a payment provider yet, you’re offered Stripe or PayPal, which are the quickest to set up. If you already have one, select Next to see the full list. Each provider has its own setup guide under Payment Providers. If the provider you use isn’t listed, contact our support team.

You can connect more than one payment provider. The list depends on the country you choose, so changing the country shows different providers. Providers marked RECOMMENDED are the integrations we work most closely with and see the most volume through. Those marked BETA are fully working and supported, but newer to Shuttle.

Payment providers connect in one of two ways:

  • OAuth: you log in to the payment provider and allow the connection
  • API keys: you enter credentials from your provider into a form

Each provider’s screen explains how to get its API keys. Shuttle checks the connection works before saving it.

  • A sandbox Shuttle account can only connect to a payment provider’s test environment.
  • A live Shuttle account can only connect to a payment provider’s live environment.

This stops real payments being taken in a test account, and test payments in a live one.

Select a connected payment provider to change its settings, for example:

  • address verification
  • fraud prevention
  • provider-specific options

The options vary by payment provider.

Customise Checkout lists every payment method your connected providers offer, each with a switch. You can:

  • turn each payment method on or off
  • choose which provider takes a payment method when more than one offers it
  • set rules for a payment method with the settings cog

For each payment method, you can set:

  • a minimum amount
  • a maximum amount
  • which currencies it’s offered in

For example, you could stop taking cards for payments over USD 1,000 and offer only ACH for larger payments.

Preview Checkout shows your checkout as your customers will see it, without taking a payment. You can:

  • see how it looks for different types of payment
  • try different currencies
  • check that the address fields and other details appear as you expect
