This guide walks through creating an Adyen test (sandbox) account so you can set
up and verify your connection before going live.

**Time to complete: 5 minutes**

1. Go to [www.adyen.com/signup](https://www.adyen.com/signup), fill in your
   details, and submit.

2. You will be sent an activation email.

3. Click the link in the email and create a password.

4. Select **Continue to log in** and log in. You will be prompted to configure
   multi-factor authentication (MFA).

5. When prompted **Which type of payments do you accept?**, select an option that
   includes **Ecommerce**.

6. Your merchant account will generally be your account name suffixed with
   **ECOM**.

   :::note[Note]
   If you want to process MOTO in addition to eCommerce, you must set up a
   separate merchant account for it — ideally your account name suffixed with
   **MOTO**. You then need to contact Adyen support to enable this facility on the
   account. See Adyen's [MOTO documentation](https://docs.adyen.com/point-of-sale/mail-and-telephone-order-moto/)
   and use their [support form](https://ca-test.adyen.com/ca/ca/contactUs/support.shtml?form=other).

7. Select **Developers > API Credentials**, and select the **ws** user.

8. Generate an API key. The credentials to enter are your Merchant ID and this
   API key.

   :::note[Note]
   You will need to ask Adyen support to enable the PCI role on your **ws** user,
   and tick the **Management API - Account read** and **Management API - Webhooks
   read and write** roles yourself so the integration can register the webhook that
   completes captures and refunds. The full list is under
   [API credential roles](/payment-providers/adyen-connect/#api-credential-roles). See also
   Adyen's [API credential roles documentation](https://docs.adyen.com/development-resources/api-credentials/roles/#frequently-used-roles-for-payments).

9. Enter your Merchant ID and API key into the setup screen. Once saved
   and tested, you will see a **Connected to Adyen** confirmation, where you can
   also enable synchronous tokenisation and MOTO.
